How to make new friends after 30 in Sofia

After 30, friendships rarely happen by chance. They come from seeing the same people again and again. This is where that happens in Sofia.

The short answer

After 30, new friends mostly come from repetition: the same people, in the same place, every week. Pick one activity, such as running, hiking, dancing, a book club or volunteering, and keep going for at least a month or two before you judge it. Sofia has a bit of all of these.

Why it gets harder after 30

School and university put us with the same people every day without anyone having to make plans. After 30 that is gone. Work, partners, children and tired evenings take the time, and some friends now live in another city or abroad. If you moved to Sofia for a job, you may be starting from zero.

A 2018 study by Jeffrey Hall at the University of Kansas estimated that it takes around 50 hours together to go from acquaintance to casual friend, around 90 to become friends, and more than 200 to become close friends. One coffee is not enough. You need something that repeats.

Things that happen every week

Every Saturday morning 5kmrun holds a free 5 km run in South Park and West Park. There is no age or pace limit, and after a few Saturdays you start to recognise faces.

Edelweiss is a Sofia hiking society with more than 130 years of history. It runs regular hikes on Vitosha and around Bulgaria and holds a weekly meeting where you can ask how to join. Details are on its website, in Bulgarian.

Horo Ensemble teaches adult beginners of any age at three schools in Sofia. Bulgarian horo is danced in a circle, with no partner.

The reading and film club at Prostranstvoto meets once a month to talk about a book or a film, in Bulgarian. You sign up on their website.

Volunteering

Volunteering brings people together around a shared task, so you do not have to invent things to talk about. TimeHeroes.org is a Bulgarian volunteering platform that lets you filter causes in Sofia, from one-day actions to regular help.

Animal Rescue Sofia organises walks for the dogs at its shelter near Dolni Bogrov on Saturdays and Sundays. You need to sign a volunteer form first, and details are on arsofia.com. Go regularly and you keep seeing the same volunteers.

If you are new to Sofia

Many people move to Sofia in their thirties for work and know nobody. The Sofia Expats group on Meetup holds meetups and hikes in English, and Sofia Social runs a weekly social and language exchange evening. Everyone at both came for the same reason you did.

How someone you know becomes a friend

The hardest step is the first meeting outside the activity. It rarely happens on its own. Someone has to say something specific: “I am going up Vitosha again on Sunday, want to come?” A day, a place, a time.

Get the number of the person you found it easiest to talk to. Suggest something small: a coffee, a walk, the next run. If they say no, ask again a week later. If they say no again, that is an answer too, and that is fine.

On Haide every event is a person looking for company for something specific. You can join one or post your own: a coffee on Wednesday, a walk on Sunday.

How long does it take to make a friend? According to Jeffrey Hall’s research, about 50 hours together for a casual friend and about 90 for a friend. At one meeting a week, that is several months.

Are there groups for people over 30 in Sofia? There are groups on Meetup and Facebook, but activities with a fixed schedule, such as hikes, dance classes and runs, often work better.
