How to make friends in Sofia without turning it into an interview
It gets easier when you stop looking for “a friend” and start looking for a Tuesday evening you would happily return to.
Look for repetition, not the perfect event
A big one-off night can be fun, but it rarely creates a friendship by itself. Places where the same people return are more useful: a weekly park workout, Wednesday board games, a language exchange, a volunteer group or a book club.
The reason is simple. At the first meeting you learn each other’s names. At the second you already share a small joke. By the third, suggesting coffee no longer feels like a formal invitation.
- Choose something you would enjoy even without the promise of new friends.
- Give it three visits before deciding it is not for you.
- Prefer a group of 6–15 people to a room of a hundred strangers.
The first conversation needs no clever opener
In Sofia, the easiest opening is about what is already happening. “Is this your first time here?”, “How did you find the event?” or “Do you know where the group starts?” works better than a rehearsed question.
Then listen for one concrete detail. If someone says they cycle, do not rush to a new topic. Ask where they ride. Conversations feel natural when neither person is trying to perform.
Make the next step small
“We should get coffee sometime” usually remains sometime. Try: “I think I’ll come again on Wednesday — will you?” or “Next time we could be on the same team.” It is an invitation without much weight attached to it.
If you got along, exchanging details is normal. Send one sentence that refers to your conversation later that day or the next. You do not need a recap of the evening, and you do not need to wait three days.
- A specific day beats “sometime”.
- A shared activity is easier than a plan with no shape.
- One short message is enough.
A plan for this week
Pick one small event near you and one recurring activity you genuinely like. Go even if nobody you know can join. Speak to two people. Before leaving, tell one of them whether you plan to come again.
That does not promise a friendship in seven days. It creates something more useful: a second chance to meet. After that, you are no longer complete strangers.
